Adia Victoria’s 2019 album Silences opens with a short, haunting prelude, “Clean”. It is an absolutely perfect way to open the album of dark, brooding, angry, mournful songs. The music contains a certain kind of masked violence happening both by and to the singer. The album, taken as a whole, is one of my favorite works of art.

What does any of this have to do with this portfolio?

While I don’t have a title or cohesive statement for this portfolio, I say that “Clean” is the perfect soundtrack for it. The photos are full of violence, fractured limbs, and decay. Through them I have tried to capture some of the action, turbulence, grief, and magic found within those moments.
