Self Portraits in Transition

“Part of every photograph is a shelf portrait.” – James Norton

The quote above has been with me since my first photography class, and it sits at the heart of my personal philosophy of photography. In 2022 I began to take stock of an underlying misery and turned to photography as a way of exposing the unconscious, the Jungian Shadow. At the same time came a turn to nature for my subject matter.

The photos below cover my nature photography from 2022-2026, from the conscious beginnings of a major life transition period to the beginning of stabilization. While these photos have developed a deeply personal set of meanings for me, the meaning I read into them is only part of what they have to say. The other part of the photograph, that isn’t the self portrait. The part that is a mirror.

I encourage you to view these images while observing yourself. Discover the parts of yourself you feel reflected by these images.
