I don’t know how I got here. Honestly, I was shocked to make it to 30. Now I’m quickly running up on 40. I am a full-time Librarian at a public library in a town that isn’t far from the one I grew up in. I recently told my wife that if I went back in time and told my 16 year-old self about myself now, that that would most likely be the most shocking part. Yet, here I am.
I think it is safe for me to say that the last 20-some years of my life have had more twists than most of my cohort. You’d think that would have taught me not to make declarative statements about myself, my direction, or my future, but only recently have I really come to see the folly. It not only closes you down to potential futures, it doesn’t actually work to control what comes next.
This photograph is from a trek in January. In January 2024 I declared that I was done with this kind of work. I’ve made similar declarations about other projects. The thing is, that they were all true, authentic declarations. This image has both very little and everything to do with the images that came before it. I don’t know how I got here. Slowly, I’m becoming okay with that.
